Every Race starts Here! A Formula 1 platform for fans who want more than headlines and highlight reels.
Who Am I?
I’m Tom McHugh, a lifelong F1 fan who’s excited to join you in discussing everything this sport has to offer. Whether it’s a thrilling qualifying session, a quiet contract update, or a key strategy shift mid-season, this platform is where I break it all down.
At Lap One, you’ll find in-depth features, weekend previews, reviews, and honest reactions to key moments. I’ll also shine a light on the drivers, the teams, and the trends shaping the Formula 1 season — not just this year, but for the seasons ahead.
How I got into Formula 1
My passion for Formula 1 started at a young age, watching the races with my brothers and my dad. It quickly became a weekend ritual — and a shared obsession. Thanks to my uncle, who worked for Renault, that passion soon turned into something much bigger. In 2006, we were lucky enough to get tickets to the World Series by Renault at Donnington Park — an event that featured some incredible racing categories like Formula Renault 2.0, Formula Renault 3.5, and the chaotic but thrilling Euro Cup Megane Trophy.
But what really sealed the deal for me was the demonstration of a Renault F1 car that had just won the 2005 Constructors’ Championship. Fernando Alonso, one of the drivers behind that title, had also claimed the Drivers’ Championship — a feat he would repeat again in 2006. And honestly, I’ll admit — I never would’ve expected to still be watching himin Formula 1 almost 20 years later!
Listening to the car roar around the track, the noise of the V10 engine passing us on the home straight is something I’ll never forget.
From that moment, i was hooked.
